Adobe Air will not upgrade, uninstall, or re-install

CPG answers a customer question about upgrading Adobe Air.Solving Adobe Air upgrade problems

Question about Adobe Air

My computer runs Windows 7 32 bit (Ultimate). I was trying to install TweetDeck and the system said I needed to update my Adobe Air. I have version 1.5 and the new version is 2.0. The system gives me this error:

An error occurred while installing Adobe AIR. Installation may not be allowed by your administrator. Please contact your administrator.

I have administrator rights, and sufficient disk space. I also tried using the “Run as Administrator” option from Windows Explorer.

I gave up on TweetDeck and tried to install Seesmic, but it ended the same way.

Finally, I went to Adobe.com to download it directly from there rather than running it out of my browser. I got the exact same error.

Adobe Air problem solved

The Adobe Air errors like yours occur because of an error in the Windows Installer system. and is easily repaired. The problem with upgrading Adobe Air as well as installing Adobe Air or uninstalling Adobe Air happens to more people than you can imagine. In fact, with the fix I’m about to give you, I think you will be able to make an easy $40 a pop for service calls with no problem.

You will need the Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (msicuu2.exe) to solve the Adobe Air problem. Unfortunately, Microsoft has discntinued the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, allegedly because of all the dufusses out there that would download it and then use it to wipe out all of their programs. The new Microsoft solution is an online “Microsoft Fix” ultility that targets specific versions of Microsoft Office. So what now?

As of right now, you can still download the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility from third party sites like this Softpedia.  If that site ever loses it, you’ll just have to look around elsewhere because we’re not going to take the risk of making it available for download from TIW. Sorry.

Once you have the cleanup utility, install it and delete the entry for Adobe Air. Do this by highlighting the Adobe Air line and then clicking the “Remove” button at the bottom of the window. Don’t hit the “Select All” button either (DUH) because if you do, you will have to reinstall all your programs that use Windows Installer.

After you have done this, you will be able to install a fresh copy of the latest version of Adobe Air.
