Apple iPhone sales numbers strong in June

June smartphone sales data released by Millennial Media showing strong June growth for Apple Computers’ iPhone is any indication, Apple shouldn’tiPhone 4worry too much about its recent iPhone 4 woes.

In spite of the introduction of new Android phones during the month, iPhone 3G and iPhone 4G sales grew by 8%, revealing continued strength in Apple’s iOS platform as its smartphone competitors continue to struggle for relevance.

Google Android now holds just 11% of the smartphone market, behind a 17% share held by RIM. Apple iOS came in at a whopping 56%.Don’t let the numbers fool you either: although second in market share, RIMOS and the RIM Blackberry platform show signs of continued decline. In spite of its number two position because developers have largely abandoned the platform in favor of iPhone and Android.

June numbers may be affected by consumer anticipation of the Apple iPhone 4 followed by its release toward the end of the month. iPhone price reductions of the older iPhone 3G at month’s end could also have affected the June stats.

Since the appearance of iPhone 4, however, Apple has suffered through several high profile data security lapses (two involving AT&T wireless), multiple legal challenges, and the well known death grip antenna problem that does not seem to be going away. Although Apple detractors find hope in the high profile Apple problems, any significant erosion of market share is unlikely.

The problems Apple Computers has had in recent weeks would sink many companies in the computers & Internet world, but Apple is different: iPhone is here to stay.
