Computers Internet help: Solving USB flash size issues

The following is a common computers Internet problem I get. Solving this has netted meLearn to handle USB flash drive size problemssome extra quick cash, but I have bigger fish to fry. As a public service, I’m going to solve your USB flash drive size problems here.

Question:

My 4 GB Kingston (or other) USB flash drive suddenly only appears as a 2 GB unit in my Windows 7 system. How do I fix this so that I can use 4 GB again? Windows will only format it as a 2 GB drive.

Answer:

The problem of a magically resizing USB flash drive can be attributed to one of many root causes. The truth is, however, that it usually takes a while for users to actually notice that their 4 GB or other size drive is now only 2 GB. This makes it difficult to definitively identify the factors that caused the problem. Still, I can fix this and so can you.

Hewlett Packard has a USB Disk Storage Format Tool that works wonders for flash drives of all sizes. The utility will format a drive with NTFS or FAT32 and can even make it bootable.

All you have to do is download the utility, run the install program and then format your USB flash drive. Whereas Windows 7 saw it as a 2 GB, this utility recognizes the actual capacity of your drive and will correct the formatting problem.

A word of caution

I shouldn’t have to tell you this. In fact, if you don’t know this, you probably shouldn’t be formatting anything at all: Use of the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool will permanently wipe out any data that is currently on your USB flash drive.

This means that you should backup any files you may still need before running the format.
