In an unusually aggressive move, the United States Government shut down blogs 73,000 blogs in one swoop as it moved against a free blogging Computers & Internet: Feds shut down blogger site Blogeteryhost, Blogetery. The host of the Web site, BurstNet, said that the action was not typical and required immediate action, speculating that the move was motivated for reasons beyond routine intellectual property rights enforcement. Those familiar with computers & Internet law suggest that the government action carries with it implications of this event may involve national security and civil liberties.

A WebHostTalk, an industry forum, has an ongoing discussion of the Blogetery incident. In the thread, a person professing to be the owner of Blogetery sets forth his case that he has been unfairly treated. Indeed, it does seem a bit harsh to silence the voices of 73,000 people, all of whom are unlikely to be involved in illegal activity.

I checked out Blogetery on Alexa, an online computers & Internet resource, and here’s what it says about the site:

About Blogetery.com (blogetery.com): Free weblog hosting with subdomains and instant activation. Offers 90% revenue share, multiple template designs and plugins.

Blogetery.com has a three-month global Alexa traffic rank of 7,620. The site is particularly popular among users in the city of Ahmadabad (where it is ranked #580). The site’s visitors view an average of 5.2 unique pages per day. While roughly 32% of the site’s visitors are in India, where it is ranked #1,334, it is also popular in the Philippines, where it is ranked #832. Compared with the overall internet population, Blogetery.com appeals more to men; its audience also tends to consist of low-income, childless users browsing from home who have attended college.

The strong international participation lends credit to speculation that the site may have been used in some aspect of terrorist activity.
